LEVEL 1

Bead Basics

Learn to read and set numbers on the abacus. Understand earth beads (1s) and the heaven bead (5). Master numbers 0-99.

LEVEL 2

Simple Addition

Add single-digit numbers without carrying. Learn to use the heaven bead for adding 5. Master basic addition techniques.

LEVEL 3

Simple Subtraction

Subtract without borrowing. Remove earth beads and heaven beads. Handle two-digit subtraction.

🖐️
LEVEL 4

5-Complement (Friends of 5)

The first key technique! Learn to add and subtract using the 5-complement when earth beads are full or empty.

🔟
LEVEL 5

10-Complement (Friends of 10)

The second key technique! Carry over to the next rod when adding past 9. Borrow when subtracting below 0.

🔢
LEVEL 6

Multi-Digit Calculations

Apply all techniques to 2-digit and 3-digit addition and subtraction. Chain multiple operations together.

LEVEL 7

Speed Training

Timed exercises to build speed and fluency. Quick-fire single and double-digit problems. Introduction to Flash Anzan.

🧠
LEVEL 8

Mental Abacus

The ultimate skill — calculate without looking at the abacus. Visualize bead movements in your mind. You are now a mental math master.

Why a Structured Path Actually Matters

You could absolutely just open the abacus and start clicking beads. But here's why most people who do that end up stuck.

The complement problem

Most self-taught abacus learners hit a wall around two-digit addition because they never properly learned complement techniques. They can add 3 + 2 just fine, but 7 + 8? They don't know what to do when a rod overflows. Our curriculum introduces complements at exactly the right time — after you're comfortable with basic bead movements but before you're trying multi-digit problems and getting frustrated.

You don't know what you don't know

There are specific bead movement patterns — like the combined 5-and-10 complement — that you'd never stumble into on your own. These patterns show up in Level 6 of our path, and they're the difference between someone who can use an abacus and someone who's actually fast at it. The curriculum introduces these in order, so each technique builds on the last.

Tests keep you honest

Each level ends with a test. You need 80% to move on. This isn't us being strict for the sake of it — it's because skipping ahead before you're ready is the number one reason people give up on abacus. If you can't pass the Level 4 test, you're not ready for Level 5. The test tells you that before you waste a week trying and failing at something you don't have the foundation for.

The honest truth: some people finish all 8 levels in 3 weeks. Others take 3 months. Both are fine. The point of the path is making sure you don't skip something critical, not hitting some arbitrary timeline.
