Soroban vs Suanpan

We support both. Here's the difference.

🗾

Soroban (Japanese)

The Japanese style—clean and simple. 1 bead on top, 4 on the bottom. Most people learning today start here.

  • ✓ 1 bead = 5, 1 bead = 1 (per rod)
  • ✓ Shows 0-9 per rod
  • ✓ Used in modern Japanese schools
  • ✓ Easier to pick up

Good for: Beginners, mental math, modern learners

🏯

Suanpan (Chinese)

The traditional Chinese design. 2 beads on top, 5 on the bottom. Older style that can show up to 15 per rod if you're curious.

  • ✓ 2 beads = 5 each, 5 beads = 1 each
  • ✓ Shows 0-15 per rod
  • ✓ Traditional design
  • ✓ More historical

Good for: Traditional methods, historical interest
