What are Complements?

5️⃣ 5-Complement (Friends of 5)

The 5-complement is what you add to a number to make 5. When you can't add more earth beads, you activate the heaven bead (worth 5) and subtract the complement from earth beads.

5-complement of 1= 4
5-complement of 2= 3
5-complement of 3= 2
5-complement of 4= 1

🔟 10-Complement (Friends of 10)

The 10-complement is what you add to make 10. When a rod overflows past 9, you carry over to the next rod and subtract the 10-complement from the current rod.

10-complement of 1= 9
10-complement of 2= 8
10-complement of 3= 7
10-complement of 4= 6
10-complement of 5= 5

How Complements Actually Work in Practice

Reading about complements is one thing. Seeing them in action is where it clicks.

Walk-through: Adding 4 + 8 on a Soroban

Try this yourself — set 4 on the ones rod. Now you need to add 8. But there aren't 8 earth beads available. There are only 4 earth beads total on a Soroban, and you've already used all of them.

This is where the 10-complement kicks in. The 10-complement of 8 is 2. So instead of trying to "add 8," you do this:

  1. 1 Add 1 to the tens rod (carry over)
  2. 2 Subtract 2 from the ones rod (the 10-complement of 8)

Result: ones rod shows 2, tens rod shows 1. That's 12. Done.

The whole thing takes a second once the complement pairs are memorized. That's why drilling matters — you need "10-complement of 8 = 2" to be instant, not something you count on your fingers.

Walk-through: Adding 3 + 4 Using the 5-Complement

Set 3 on the ones rod (3 earth beads up). Now add 4. You've only got 1 earth bead left — not enough.

Use the 5-complement of 4, which is 1. Here's what you do:

  1. 1 Push the heaven bead down (adds 5)
  2. 2 Remove 1 earth bead (subtract the 5-complement)

There are only 4 pairs to memorize (1↔4, 2↔3). Most people nail these in a day or two. Don't mix in 10-complements until these are automatic.

Say the complement out loud

When a number flashes, say the complement before clicking. "7 → 3." "4 → 6." It sounds silly but it works. The verbal repetition locks it into memory faster than just clicking.

Aim for under 1 second per pair

If you see "6" and you have to think "um... 10 minus 6... that's 4," you're not ready for real calculations yet. Keep drilling until the answer comes before the thought does.
